Most renewals are refused or delayed for the same few reasons, and almost none of them are about the applicant. They are about a document that expired earlier in the chain — an insurance policy, a trade licence, a passport with less than six months left on it. Start thirty days before expiry, not on the day. That window absorbs a medical test that comes back needing a repeat, an insurance policy that renews late, or a passport that turns out to have too little validity left. Nothing in the chain is slow on its own; it is the retries that take time.
The order that works
- 1Confirm the sponsor's side is clean: trade licence and establishment card valid, no outstanding fines on the file.
- 2Renew health insurance first, and make sure it covers the emirate the visa is issued in.
- 3Book the medical fitness test, and allow for a second visit if a result needs repeating.
- 4Submit the Emirates ID application and keep the receipt — it is your proof of status while the card is produced.

Where renewals go wrong
- An expired trade licence: an employer whose licence has lapsed cannot renew anyone's visa, including its own owner's.
- A passport with under six months of validity — renew the passport first, then the residency.
- A name spelled differently on the passport and the file. One extra letter is enough to stop the application.
- A long absence from the country. An ordinary residence visa is generally cancelled after six continuous months outside the UAE.

Government fees depend on the category, the emirate and whether the file is processed normally or urgently, and they are revised from time to time. Ask for the breakdown in writing before anything is paid: the fee, the medical, the Emirates ID, and the service charge should each be visible as their own line.

Can I still renew after the visa has expired?
Usually yes, within the grace period that follows expiry, but fines start accruing from the day it lapses. The length of that grace period has changed more than once, so confirm the current one rather than relying on what applied last time.
Does the whole family renew together?
The sponsor's own file is renewed first, because dependents are attached to it. Once it is live again the dependents follow, usually in the same visit.
Do I have to be in the UAE for it?
Yes for the parts that involve you in person — the medical fitness test and the biometrics for the Emirates ID. The paperwork around them does not need you present.
Who can sponsor a residence visa?
